What is Barcode Registration (GS1 India GTIN / EAN)?

A GS1 barcode is a globally unique product number (GTIN, also called EAN-13 in retail) issued under a company prefix that GS1 India allots to the brand owner. Each product variant (SKU - every size, flavour, pack) gets its own GTIN, which is printed as a scannable barcode on the pack. Retail chains and e-marketplaces verify these numbers against GS1's global registry, so only barcodes licensed from GS1 India (not bought from resellers) are accepted. The subscription also gives access to GS1's DataKart platform to allocate numbers and manage product data.

Applicant must be the brand owner or an entity authorised by the brand owner (GS1 India). Separate registration is needed for each company/brand if you are not the brand owner. Fee depends on annual sales turnover slab, number of barcodes (100 / 1,000 / 10,000 / 1,00,000) and subscription period (1, 2, 3, 5 or 10 years). Barcode capacity cannot be changed later - once exhausted, a new registration is needed. Companies registered outside India must contact registration@gs1india.org.

Subscription periods of 1, 2, 3, 5 or 10 years. Renew before expiry (GS1 gives 3 months extra validity on early 3/5/10-year renewals). 15-day grace after expiry without penalty; Rs 1,180 late fee for the next 30 days; after that the subscription is terminated for non-payment.

Official GS1 India fee = one-time registration fee + subscription fee for the chosen period + 18% GST on both + Rs 3,000 refundable interest-free security deposit (not charged on 10-year option). GS1 India published two structures on 28 Sep 2026: one 'applicable till 30th September 2026' (file named effective from Oct 2025) and a new one 'applicable from 1st October 2026'. Because pages go live from October 2026, quote the 1 Oct 2026 table. Cheapest option: 100 barcodes, 1 year, turnover up to Rs 5 Cr = Rs 50,200 total to GS1. BarcodeVault fee (Rs 12,000 + GST = Rs 14,160) is separate. Frequently asked questions

Can I buy cheap barcodes from a reseller instead of GS1 India?

Marketplaces and retailers validate GTINs against the GS1 registry. Numbers not licensed to your company by GS1 India can be rejected or delisted. We file only genuine GS1 India registrations in your company's name.

How many barcodes do I need?

One GTIN per unique SKU - every size, colour, flavour or pack count needs its own number. GS1 offers capacities of 100, 1,000, 10,000 or 1,00,000. The capacity cannot be changed later, so plan for future launches too.

What is the total GS1 fee for a small business?

From 1 October 2026, a company with turnover up to Rs 5 crore taking 100 barcodes for 1 year pays GS1 India Rs 50,200 (Rs 27,000 registration + Rs 13,000 subscription + Rs 7,200 GST + Rs 3,000 refundable deposit). Our professional fee of Rs 12,000 + GST is separate.

How long does it take?

GS1 India says usually 7-10 working days after the form, documents and payment are submitted.

Is the barcode a one-time purchase?

No. You pay a one-time registration fee plus a subscription for 1, 2, 3, 5 or 10 years, and must renew before expiry to keep using the numbers.

What happens if I don't renew on time?

GS1 allows 15 days of grace without penalty, then charges Rs 1,180 for the next 30 days. After that the subscription is terminated for non-payment.

I am a contract manufacturer. Can I apply for my client's brand?

No. GS1 India allows only the brand owner, or an entity it authorises, to apply. Ask the brand owner to apply. We can file for them.

Do I need GST registration?

GS1 accepts a GST/VAT certificate as proof of status for most entity types. Companies can use the ROC certificate or MOA along with GST, and partnerships can use a partnership deed. Tell us your entity type and we'll confirm the exact proof needed.
